村名的说法是：村边山岗形似鼋，鼋尾圆，村建在鼋尾，起名圆尾，后来取谐音写作元美。^[1]

据博雅地名网所载，1213年有姚姓人家从浙江迁来建村；合作化时设元美高级社，三江公社分出后设元美大队；1987年设元美村民委员会，属三江镇；2004年三江并入石滩镇。^[1]

据博雅地名网（未注明统计年份）的介绍，村民共830人，设8个生产队；水田约900亩，鱼塘500亩，旱地约300亩，村集体收入主要靠鱼塘出租。^[1]
