塘边社区位于湖里街道中部，在福厦路西侧，东边以福厦路为界，南面到兴隆路，西边到华荣路，北边靠湖里大道。社区名源于村旁多池塘的地貌，由原塘边村与若干住宅小区合并而成。[1][2]

地名由来[edit]

村旁池塘众多，共有七个，排成弧形，龙渊塘、长寮塘便是其中两个，社区因而得名。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

明中叶，莫姓最早在此开基，之后高姓迁入。明末，林姓从福州迁来，现有两百余户。清代此地归寨上保管辖，民国初归竹坑保，抗战胜利后改归湖里保。[3]

1949年10月，此地划入高殿乡，与马垅、古塘龙、小东山、后埔共同组成五鹏村；1952年转隶湖里乡；1958年成为前线公社塘边大队。1980年改隶禾山公社，1984年9月设立湖里街道塘边居委会。[3]

1996年8月，原村析出四个居委会，2002年底改制为社区。[3]

荣誉[edit]

2021年11月，社区被福建省爱卫办命名为「2021年福建省卫生社区」；2025年12月，社区上榜「2025年福建省儿童友好社区」名单。[1]
