湖西社区在陈店镇西端，正处在陈店镇和普宁市军埠镇石桥头的分界线上，国道穿境而过。[1]全社区姓林，864户、5092人，面积1.239平方千米。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

村子明弘治年间（1488—1505年）立寨，林氏自福建莆田迁来；因在沟湖村以西，起初叫沟湖仔村，后称湖西。[1]1950年隶属陈店镇，到1958年公社化，称定安大队，1983年起属陈店镇（乡级），1986年起改居委会，1992年起称管理区，1999年又恢复居委会。[1]

经济与社会[edit]

耕地768亩，以水稻、甘薯为主；历史上有编织棕衣、制作筛斗的手工业，改革开放后兴办文胸内衣、五金电器等工副业，建筑企业共9家，小作坊计70家。[1]1987年港胞林中孚等捐资兴建湖西学校，办成九年一贯制，又建有“松鹤园”老人活动中心。[1]
