历史沿革[edit]
相传村前原是南溪港湾，可通船到东陇、溪南、隆都、上华。元末有渔户在此定居，村名叫瀛西，后因东边就是大海，「瀛」与「洋」音义相近，改称西洋；村情页还说到宋初（约1100年）渐成村落。[1][2] 西洋早年隶饶平县隆眼城都，新中国成立后归澄海县隆都区。四个村（西洋、石头坑、龙潭、下南溪）先在1953年联成西洋乡，后在1984年改设下西乡；1986年11月撤区置镇，西洋单独设村，转属东里镇。[3]
2004年12月西洋村与龙潭村合并，2010年10月又分开，沿用至今。[3]
人口与经济[edit]
村情介绍称，西洋自然村有398户、1685人，土地约2.25平方千米，村民以张姓为主，另有十多个姓；农业以玉米、蔬果和水产养殖为主，东里镇内外河船队的船员大部分是这个村的人。爱国华侨陈景川是本村人。[2] 2006年，西洋村被评为汕头市生态文明示范村。[2]
