东山社区在汕头市潮南区峡山街道东部，因蝴蝶山位于蛇山以东而得名，居民以陈姓为主，也叫“东山陈”。元延祐五年（1318年），陈梅隐由贵屿迁居于此，是陈氏祖先，社区由此创村。[1]
历史沿革[edit]
陈氏之外，李氏于清末从贵屿迁来，吴氏的吴成美清末先从胪溪迁到下东，后移居东山。村落呈块状分布，旧时住宅多为贝灰泥木结构平房，如今混有钢筋混凝土楼房。[1]
1921年起归潮阳县第五区；此前自明至清、民国初年，同属黄陇都新兴乡。[2]
经济与社会[edit]
社区面积0.69平方千米，耕地50亩，2009年有608户、3358人，324国道（广汕公路）穿境而过，行业有服装、织带、化妆品和运输。当年工农业总产值2695万元，人均年收入5312元。[1]
旅外乡亲出力不少：1989年旅泰侨胞陈炎隆等捐资兴建东山学校，2001年又捐建老人活动中心“寿星大楼”，2006年扩建新校区，后来作为东山中学使用。[1]
