南塘镇镇区原先只设一个南塘社区居委会，下分一村、二村、三村、四村、五村和新一村。2012年起，这些村分别立为居民委员会，南塘镇如今的五个社区由此而来：元兴、新墟、南兴、新兴、元新[2]。新兴社区是其中唯一由两个村合并设立的[1]。
