历史沿革[edit]
解放前的中元是两个自然村，即上元和中元；1951年土改时两村并为上中元乡，之后习称中元乡。[1] 1956年先办了5个高级社，次年并成五星高级社；1958年改称中元大队，归仙村公社；1976年转到宁西公社；1983年公社撤销，大队更名中元乡；1987年撤乡改村，设中元村民委员会，属宁西镇。[1]

博雅地名网载，村民1629人、370户，分属8个合作社：大浪、刁屋、李屋、花元冚、荔枝山、大窝、陈屋和林屋。[1] 村内有南乡路和朱宁路两条主要对外道路。[1]
荣誉[edit]
2021年11月，村获「2020年度广州名村」的称号；2024年6月，列入2023年度「广州市美丽乡村」名单；2024年11月入选「2024年广州市充分就业社区（村）」名单。[1]
