东石镇属梅州市平远县，在广东省东北部的县境中部，距县城约14公里，镇域面积约159.7平方公里。[1]

镇名据博雅地名网所记，是因所在河谷上游平地多卵石；明嘉靖四十三年（1564年）这里划归平远，称义化都东石堡。[2][4] 镇内产铁矿、石灰石、瓷土、耐火石，出产花生、锅笃茶、碰柑；抗日将军黄梅兴是东石人。[1][5]

历史沿革[edit]

明代这里隶属程乡县义化都，嘉靖四十三年（1564年）改归平远，当时的名称是义化都东石堡。到清康熙二十二年（1683年），都、堡的建制取消，改为东石乡，直到清末。进入民国，东石先是划作平远第三区，后改为第二区，另设有东石乡。[2]

平远1949年5月解放，随即设东石市。1952年6月平远并入蕉岭县，东石成了蕉岭的第七区；1954年3月两县重新分开，东石改属平远第三区。1956年区撤销，设东石乡。1958年9月人民公社化，东石、泗水两乡合为东石公社；同年11月平远又与兴宁合县，公社未变，1961年1月分县后，东石、泗水各自成社。[2]

1983年11月公社制取消，茅坪公社并入东石，设东石区公所。1986年11月区改为乡镇，东石镇成立，茅坪则另立茅坪乡。2003年9月，县里调整乡镇区划，已升格的茅坪镇再并入东石镇。[2][1]

另据各村的沿革记载，原太阳村范围内的锅叾村委会在2005年撤销并入太阳村，此后全镇为1个社区和17个行政村。[7]

地理环境[edit]

东石镇地处平远县中部，东面与蕉岭县和本县泗水镇相邻，西接河头镇，南面是坝头镇和热柘镇，北面为仁居镇和上举镇。[1] 圩镇规划面积4平方公里，曾是附近5个镇的农产品集散地；省道332线和县道X036线穿过全镇。[1]

人口[edit]

2003年末，全镇总人口33396人（8138户），其中农业人口30966人，辖18个村民委员会、1个居委会、223个村民小组，耕地约23209亩。[1] 博雅地名网引述2020年第七次全国人口普查的结果，称镇人口为2.14万人，在平远县各镇中排第3位。[4]

经济[edit]

镇内有铁矿、瓷土、耐火石、石灰石等矿产，其中尖山铁矿储量大、品位高，有害元素含量低。[1] 2003年，全镇工业总产值15761万元，行业以铁矿、石灰石、耐火石、铸造、水泥和家具为主；非公有制经济纳税750.8万元，占全镇税收的72.7%。[1]

农业方面，当地出产金柚、三华李、花生、碰柑、茶叶和淡水鱼。2003年统计的产量是：碰柑30吨，锅笃茶46吨，花生则达1400吨。[1] 省农业农村厅的“一村一品、一镇一业”专业村名单上，镇内有三个村：2020年8月，太阳村（锅叾茶）和茅坪村（花生）进入首批名单；2021年9月，洋背村（三华李）进入第二批。[7][8][9]

教育与卫生[edit]

2004年7月，铁民中学并入东石中学，镇上有东石中学和茅坪中学两所中学；当时有小学20所，其中13所为完全小学。镇有一级甲等的卫生院1所，各村设卫生站。[1]

名胜古迹[edit]

毓秀书院在灵水村，是平远石北乡苏维埃政府旧址，1929年9月平远县第一个苏维埃政府在这里成立。[3] 蕙楼（慎敏第）在锡水村，是华侨吴蕙根在1924年所建的客家民居，带有西式风格。[3] 凉庭村的丰泰堂是清代建筑，2015年2月5日被梅州市人民政府公布为第三批市级文物保护单位。[3] 大屋村的黄梅兴故居建于1927年，黄梅兴旧居于2017年3月24日公布为第五批市级文物保护单位。[3]

凉庭村还在2013年8月列入第二批中国传统村落名录。[10]

著名人物[edit]

黄梅兴（1897年—1937年），东石镇坳上村（今大屋村一带）人，黄埔军校第一期毕业，1937年8月14日在淞沪会战中于上海八字桥一带殉国，时任第88师第264旅旅长，后被追授陆军中将。[5][3]

刘述元（1714年—），东汶村茶园下人，清乾隆年间进士，曾任四川通江知县，著有《六有堂稿》《铁峰吟草》。[6]
