城东镇在广东省梅州市梅县区东北部，在梅州城区之东，距城区约8公里，辖1个社区和12个行政村，镇政府设在竹洋。[1][2]镇名因位于梅城以东而来；建制可追溯到清康熙年间的东厢堡，1987年4月改称镇。[2][3]

历史沿革[edit]

今城东镇一带在清康熙年间称东厢堡。1931年（民国二十年）堡制改为区、乡，其地分属梅县第一区与第二区的一部分。新中国成立后设过城东区，同年10月即撤并入附城区；次年（1950年）建城东乡。1963年该乡改组为城东人民公社，到1983年撤销公社设区，1987年4月再改为现名的镇。[2]

镇域东邻丙村镇，西接石扇镇和梅江区城北镇，南与金山街道、西阳镇交界，北与白渡镇及蕉岭县新铺镇相连。[1]全镇面积约79.3平方千米，圩镇面积1.2平方千米，耕地680公顷，林地5226公顷。[3]境内丘陵山地与狭长盆谷相间，北高南低，有煤、锰、铜、铅、锌、石灰石、建筑石和黏土等矿产。[4][3]

人口民族[edit]

据百度百科，2019年城东镇常住人口21208人。[1]据博雅地名网，2021年统计在册人口2.12万、5560户；该网另载第七次全国人口普查（2021年6月）结果为1.54万人。[3][2]维基百科称侨眷约占全镇居民的六成，是梅县区的重点侨乡之一。[4]

名胜古迹[edit]

莲塘村古氏洋楼建于1919年，2015年公布为广东省文物保护单位；谢田村的谢田谢氏祖祠为明代建筑，2016年公布为第四批梅州市文物保护单位。[5][6]博雅地名网还记载境内有千年古红梅、梅梅冬青各一株，以及塔子坳古战场。[3]

著名人物[edit]

据博雅地名网，已故的全国政协常委李伯珠和教育家廖道传出生于城东镇。[3]廖道传（1877年—1931年）出生在今石月村，1913年任广东高等师范学校校长。[7]
