泰美社区位于泰美镇的镇中心，在城乡分类中属镇中心区；1984年设立居民委员会，沿用至今。[1]

地名由来[edit]

泰美圩建于明崇祯二年（1629年），因按政区排列和摊派赋税时排在最后，称“派尾”；1916年嫌“尾”字不吉，改为“派美”；1936年因“派”与“败”谐音，改“派”为“太”；1938年又觉得“太美”俗气，定名“泰美”。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

清代由苏州巡司署管辖。民国时期，这里属二区忠孝乡。新中国成立后的变化如下：1949年10月设泰美乡（二区），1952年7月划归五区，1955年10月成立泰美区，1956年11月区撤销，复为泰美乡；1958年10月并入泰美人民公社，而到1983年11月公社改区，1986年1月起归泰美镇。[1]
