村在茶背南片较低洼处，原称下南坑，因而得名。[1]1958年公社化时叫下南坑大队；其后1979至1987年为下南乡，1987至1998年为下南管理区；至1999年改称下南村委会。[1]

种植高山茶、橄榄。[1]

  • 2019年9月公布的「2018年广东省民主法治示范村（社区）」创建单位名单中有该村。[1]
