潭头镇在广东省茂名市高州市的西北部，是一个山区老区镇，西边紧挨信宜市镇隆镇。镇政府设在潭头圩，下辖1个社区居委会和14个村委会[1][2][4]。镇名取自潭头村，村西的河道里曾有一处深潭[1]。2020年第七次全国人口普查，全镇约3.29万人，在高州市各街道乡镇中居第20位[1]。

历史沿革[edit]

明清两代，这一带归高州府茂名县的德兰、潭头、德新三处地方管辖。清末到1947年划为茂名县第十四区，新中国成立后至1953年仍称十四区[3]。1957年设潭头乡；1961年，从镇隆、南塘、木头塘三个乡分出的潭头、北兰、凤坡、大垌（今五村）、丹彰五个生产大队，合组成潭头公社；同年下半年一度分为潭头、大地两个公社，1963年重又合并[3]。1983年公社改区，1986年12月区改为镇[3]。维基百科则写作1987年建镇[4]，两说有一年之差。

潭头社区居委会设于1993年，后更名为社区居民委员会[5]。

地名由来[edit]

丹彰河下游在深龙一带转弯，流向洋大塘垌时积成一片大深潭，潭的上方有潭头村，镇名即由村名而来[1]。

地理环境[edit]

全镇总面积，博雅地名网载为76.3平方千米[1][2]，维基百科载为92.69平方千米[4]。鉴江流经镇境，国道207线南北贯通全镇，东西向有县道潭丹公路，村村都通了水泥路[2]。

经济[edit]

据博雅地名网转录的镇概况，全镇种有优质木本水果约4万亩，鱼塘约4000亩，香蕉约5000亩，建有粮食、甜玉米、荔枝、龙眼、淡水养殖五大商品生产基地；工业方面，造纸、建筑建材、滑石矿开采和农副产品加工已成规模，年产值超过千万元的企业有4家[2]。潭头紧邻信宜市镇隆镇（信宜旧县城）和红旗农场，圩镇上农贸市场和餐饮较为活跃[2]。

荣誉[edit]

2022年1月，潭头镇被命名为「2021年度广东省卫生城镇」[1]。2026年3月，潭头镇与镇内的六同村一起，被认定为广东省第三批「百千万工程」典型村镇[1]。
