城东社区属汕头市澄海区凤翔街道，是主城区的一部分，名字来自它在旧澄海县城东侧的位置。[1]1563年澄海建县，县治设在这里的辟望。[2]

历史沿革[edit]

建县以前，这片地方属海阳县怀德乡下外莆都的辟望村；设县后辟望成了县治，社区一带当时叫东社，后改叫城东。[2]

民国时期，它先后是在城区的东社乡（1932年）、东社镇（1945年）和城中镇（1946年）的一部分。[2]新中国成立后，1951年设城东居民办事处，归城关镇；1986年改为城东居委会；1996年划入新设的凤翔街道，2002年起称城东社区。[2]
