南亩社区设立于1986年12月25日，之后未有变动。^[1]

博雅地名网称，这里既非山区，也非平原，居民以耕田为生；《诗经》里多处写到“南亩”，又有“南东其亩”的说法，加上此地在南雄东南，因而得名。^[1]

2019年9月，南亩社区被列入2018年度「广东省“民主法治示范村（社区）”创建单位」。^[1]
