茅塘村在兴宁城西约5公里，属半山区村，有“兴宁西大门”之称。国道205线穿村而过，省道225、226线和官汕线在此交汇，广梅汕铁路从村西经过，铁路货场建在村东。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

村的旧名是茅塘铺，铺设于明洪武二年（1369年）。当时此处有一座亭子，旁边开着店铺，从这里往上看是成片茅草，往下看则是低洼的水塘，村名由此而来。[1]1951年11月至1958年11月称茅塘乡，公社化时为茅塘大队；新陂的第二个农业初级社红光社成立于1954年；1961年6月分出先声大队；1978年3月属长岭公社，1983年长岭公社撤销后归新陂区；1984年3月改乡人民政府，1989年9月称管理区办事处，1999年改称村委会。[1]

经济[edit]

2021年9月，茅塘村以草鱼入选第二批广东省“一村一品、一镇一业”专业村。[1]
