城南社区属汕头市澄海区凤翔街道，是主城区的一部分，位于旧澄海县城的南侧，故名。[1]这一带本是海阳县下外莆都辟望村的地方，澄海建县后留在县城范围内。[2]

历史沿革[edit]

社区所在原是海阳县怀德乡下外莆都的辟望村，1563年澄海建县，辟望被选作县治；这一片曾称南社，后改作城南。[2]

民国期间，先后有南社乡（1932年）、南社镇（1945年）和城南镇（1946年）的称呼。[2]1951年起设城南居民办事处，归城关镇管；1986年改建城南居委会；1996年成为凤翔街道的一部分，2002年定名城南社区。[2]
