历史沿革[edit]
潭江流到这里转了个弯，形成江湾，早先叫牛渚湾，清代设过牛渚湾圩。清末民初简化为牛湾；新宁铁路在此建了牛湾火车站，进入民国后牛湾又被用作乡名[1]。
刘、黄、陈等姓村民在成化年间（1465—1487年）已来此设摊贸易，生意渐旺，顺治年间（1644—1661年）形成固定的圩集[1]。
1961年从罗坑人民公社分出牛湾人民公社，驻牛湾圩；1986年改设居委会，1988年称牛湾圩镇居民管理区，2000年再称居委会，2002年起为牛湾社区居委会[1]。同年，原牛湾镇并入罗坑镇[2]。
文化[edit]
新宁铁路在新会境内跨潭江处用轮渡过江，牛湾火车轮渡码头遗址被列为罗坑镇内的文物[2]。1908年2月19日，孙中山到牛湾火车码头会晤铁路创办者陈宜禧[2]。罗坑镇圩镇的墙绘也以牛湾码头为题材，并引用了巴金《机器的诗》中的描写[3]。
