湖塘村是马头镇辖下的行政村，在新丰县东北部[1]。据博雅地名网所载沿革，1953年设乡，1958年改称大队，1984年改设乡政府，1990年成为管理区，1998年起为村民委员会，沿用至今[1]。湖塘村名列2019年9月公布的2018年「广东省“民主法治示范村（社区）”创建单位」名单[1]。
1959年新丰江水库蓄水淹没旧墟后，马头墟迁到湖塘村重建，镇的治所也设于此[2]。
