平东镇属汕尾市海丰县，在县境东北的山区，坐落于公平水库库区内，镇政府设在日中社区，镇区离县城约24千米。东面与陆河县、陆丰市交界，南面是可塘镇和城东镇，西面是公平镇，北面是黄羌镇。^[1]^[2]

镇下设日中1个社区和9个村委会。这里是海陆丰革命时期的「九龙峒」根据地所在，也是民俗学家钟敬文祖籍所在的山区。^[1]^[3]

历史沿革[edit]

镇名出现于1950年，因位置在公平镇以东而叫平东。^[3] 清代这一带属海丰县石塘都；1949年7月解放，1950年建政，归海丰二区，1953年归公平区。^[3]^[4]

此后建制多次反复：1957年撤区设平东乡，1958年同公平乡合组公平人民公社，1961年2月单独成立平东人民公社，1963年又并回公平公社；1974年6月再从公平分出，恢复平东公社。1984年3月改社为区，1987年5月12日撤区建镇。^[3]

地理环境[edit]

全镇山地多，镇政府网站介绍境内有公平水库、南门水库、平龙水库三座水库，并称辖区内设有公平水库湿地鸟类保护区。^[1] 据一份早年的概况，南门、平龙两座中型水库合计库容约2800万立方米，建有水电站，装机容量1250千瓦。^[4] 省道335线穿过镇区，潮惠高速公路互通口距镇区约1.5千米。^[1]^[2]

平东是公平水库移民集中的地方：移民村共26个，水库移民及其后代约1.6万人，镇域占公平水库集雨面积的45%。^[1]

镇政府网站载全镇有86个自然村，人口约3.5万；第七次全国人口普查（2020年）的常住人口为1.21万人，在海丰县各镇中列第10位。^[1]^[3]

经济[edit]

以农业为主。镇政府称2023年农业总产值为5.76亿元，比上年增长3.1%；九龙生姜、凤翔观茶叶获评全省农业名牌产品，当地还有海亮明康汇农业基地等企业。^[1] 另有陆港农业基地，2009年成立的汕尾市陆港生态种养实业公司在镇内经营耕地与鱼塘共1.1万余亩，2016年成功申报「广东省农业公园」项目。^[5] 近年在林下发展了咖啡种植，汕美湖畔咖啡基地面积1050余亩，据介绍2025年产值超过1000万元。^[6]

20世纪末的概况曾记，九龙峒出产生姜、芋头等，并有明代屯军所凿的南门吊涧、宋代所立的将军碑可供参观。^[4]

名胜古迹[edit]

坑口村的凤翔观：道教观宇，建于虎山上，1923年「七五农潮」后彭湃等人曾在此避难、开会，详见该村条目。^[7]
九龙峒党训班旧址：1941年、1942年海陆丰中心县委两次在此办班。^[8]^[9]
南门村的南门吊涧，被列为海丰古八景之一；谷兜村有谷大茂楼与平东大茂楼，后者2022年3月被汕尾市公布为第三批市级文物保护单位。^[1]^[3]
黄甘岭古道：全长约13千米，由黄羌镇上头洋经谷兜、南门两村委通往陆河县龙须径，始建于清乾隆年间。^[10]

著名人物[edit]

民俗学家钟敬文（1903年—2002年）祖籍平东镇山下村，镇政府网站亦把其出生地旧址列为镇内景点。^[1]^[11]
