爱国街道位于广东省湛江市霞山区东部，东面临麻斜海，辖区面积4.95平方千米。街道办事处设在人民东社区，距霞山区人民政府约1千米；2021年10月时下辖5个社区和1个行政村，行政村为海岛上的特呈岛村。[1][2]

历史沿革[edit]

这一带早先叫洪屋街道。西营区人民政府成立于1950年，设有洪屋、东堤、延安、逸仙、民治五个办事处；到1953年，洪屋与东堤合为中心办事处，1958年再易名洪屋办事处。1966年10月起，改叫爱国街道；1968年6月曾称爱国革命委员会，后来又改了回来。[1][2]

街道名称取自辖区内的主干道爱国路。[2]

各社区现在的范围是两次重组的结果。2002年，洪屋、创新、创业、红新四个居委会组成洪屋社区，爱国、自力、东堤、东风四个居委会组成东堤社区，环湖与霞湖两个居委会组成环湖社区；2003年，汉口社区由解放街道的青岛、逸仙、汉口三个居委会并成，并入爱国街道。[2][3]

地理环境[edit]

街道东临麻斜海，东北与海滨街道相接，南与友谊街道相连，西邻工农街道，北与解放街道毗邻。[1]

人口[edit]

据百度百科，街道在2011年末的总人口为45326人。博雅地名网引述第七次全国人口普查结果（2020年11月1日），记街道人口为3.49万人，在霞山区各街道中居第7位。[1][2]

名胜古迹[edit]

街道辖下的特呈岛村在湛江湾水道中部，岛上有红树林、冼太庙和抗日革命旧址，详见该村条目。此外，博雅地名网列有一处革命遗址，在特呈岛里村的陈氏宗祠内，称为「太邱小学——特呈岛革命活动据点遗址」。[2]
