村子建于明初，原先和南金合称南畔村；1956年建立英明生产合作社，「英明」后来成了村名。[1]

辖区面积2.42平方千米，常住4218人，外来者多达13000人。[2]

工业为主、农商为辅：有工商企业150家，集中在印刷、夹万、板材和家具；养殖白鳝、桂花鱼、加州鲈、黄骨鱼等；商业沿明安路展开，社区内有英明、昌大两个市场。[2]

称号有广东省卫生村、「六好」平安和谐社区，以及佛山市的生态示范村和宜居社区。[2]
