村里山竹多，村名因此而来。[1]1949年称竹山乡，1958年设竹山大队，1983年称乡政府，1989年称管理区，1999年定名竹山村委会。[1]

在册327户、1901人，上一年农村经济总收入769万元。[1]2020年8月列入首批广东省「一村一品、一镇一业」专业村，品种为板栗。[1]百度百科提到该村有「红色村」党建示范工程。[2]
