历史沿革[edit]
村民认为市头建于宋代，当时由广州的屯田军户迁来开垦。理由有三：1963年沙边修灌溉站时挖出宋代的「政和通宝」铜钱；村里有口罗隐井；陈姓始祖的牌位上写着「大宋」。据说当时已有龚、钟两姓聚居。村子曾叫周南，后来称市头。[1]1958年人民公社化时是市头大队，1987年成立市头村民委员会。[1]
名胜古迹[edit]
沙边窑遗址在沙边自然村东面，是北宋时期规模较大的民窑，窑址分布在大顶岗、孖窑岗、陈岗、后底岗、鉴贤岗等山岗，岗上有废瓷、匣钵和窑砖堆积。2008年12月19日，广州市政府公布其为第七批广州市文物保护单位。[3]
市头蒋氏宗祠在市头大道南，是村中蒋氏纪念先祖奉政大夫的祠堂，三间两进，始建于明嘉靖十五年（1536年），清康熙五十七年（1718年）和嘉庆二十三年（1818年）两次重修，梁架、柁墩、雀替上雕有戏曲人物、花卉和动物。[2]2010年11月，该祠被番禺区政府公布为区文物保护单位，现列在番禺区政府门户网站公布的广州市文物保护单位名录中。[2][4]
南村公社涌口水闸建于20世纪50年代，在涌口自然村村口，控制着全镇河涌的出口，用来调节水流、保护农田和村庄。[2]
文化[edit]
2006年，村里的龙舟队在广州市国际龙舟邀请赛的传统龙比赛中获第三名，醒狮队在加拿大举办的第二届世界狮王争霸赛上获第二名。[5]2020年至2022年，市头村连续上榜淘宝村名单。[1]
