山美街道在高州市东部，隶属广东省茂名市，位于高州城区东郊，辖1个社区和6个行政村，街道办事处设在城东社区。[1]辖区面积39平方千米，2011年末总人口23077人。[1]街道因办事处驻地山美村得名，1995年由山美区改设而成。[1][2]

历史沿革[edit]

辖区在民国时期属高州县第一区。[2]新中国成立后，先后归中区（附城镇）、区级镇，1957年撤区并乡时并入附城片的苍地乡，1958年随公社化划入超美公社，1961年起属环城区（1963年一度并入环城公社）。[2]

设镇之后，这里从1987年起归高州镇管辖；1995年4月先成立山美区管委会，到11月正式设为山美街道。[1]

地理环境[edit]

街道东面与曹江镇、泗水镇相连，南面毗邻石仔岭街道和潘州街道，西面与宝光街道相邻，北面与南塘镇交界，是高州市城区的东大门。[1]鉴江绕境而过，高州至长坡、高州至茂名东、高州至广州的公路穿越辖区。[3]

博雅地名网转录的街道简介称，农业以荔枝、龙眼、时令蔬菜、水稻和养殖为特色，水果种植1.6万亩，产量55036吨，产值2292万元；辖区有河砂、花岗石等矿产。[3]工业方面，工业企业达78家，其中手套加工企业36家，嘉洋皮件制品有限公司为当地手套加工龙头企业，每年出口额超过一千万美元。[3]街道上有一条饮食街，近20家饭店，其中山美葱油鸡在当地知名。[3]（该简介未注明数据年份。）
