1954年起归方家乡，1959年起为山美大队，1984年起为山美乡，1987年2月起为村委会，1989年起为管理区办事处，1999年定名为山美村民委员会。[1]
山美村在2021年1月入选「湛江市2020年度全市文明村」。[1]
