茂桂路村是安铺镇的行政村，村处大围中心，邻村村民放牛要经过这里，旧称“牛过路村”，嫌名称不雅而改作茂桂路[1][2]。

1950年起归属廉江县第四区大山行政村，1953年起归属第七区欧家乡；其后1961年欧家大队一分为二，设欧家、茂桂路两个大队；其后1987年起称作茂桂路管理区，属河堤镇；其后1999年起改称茂桂路村委会[1]。

2022年9月，茂桂路村被认定为「2022年湛江市文明村」[1]。
