博雅地名网对地名的解释是：梁氏先祖于1926年自荷兰返回祖籍地马冈，在此修路、建圩，取“公共安全”之意，故名公安[1]。同一页面的沿革一栏则写作元末建圩，与上述1926年建圩的说法不一致，这里两说并录[1]。

行政建制上，它先是1987年设立的公安墟管理区，隶开平县马冈镇；开平1993年撤县设市后归开平市马冈镇管辖；1999年起为社区居民委员会[1]。
