据地名由来的说法，居民刚迁到这里时四周多山，便在屋后开菜园种菜，取其近便，起初叫“园近”，后来慢慢写成“员瑾”。^[1]

建制名称先后为员瑾乡（1949年）、员瑾大队（1958年）、员瑾乡政府（1983年）、员瑾管理区（1989年）、员瑾村民委员会（1999年）。^[1]
