据博雅地名网转录的村情材料，村里人多地少，村民以外出务工经商为主，农业以花生和水稻为主，近年引种美国超甜玉米，另有300亩香蕉基地。[1]
辖区有完全小学3所、文化楼2幢、古庙2座。村情材料称这里是抗日战争和解放战争时期的根据地，属革命老区。村里还办有梅滨酒厂、立新轮胎翻新厂等企业5家。[1]
水口渡、湖塘两村早年都属三江：1950年前后水口渡属三江行政村，1952年湖塘一带属吴梅县三江行政村，1964年湖塘从三江大队分出。[2][3]
