历史沿革[edit]
街道所在的一带原属海丰县汕尾镇。1988年城区建立，次年2月撤销汕尾镇，原镇区分成凤山、香洲、新港三个街道。[3]城区政府和博雅地名网另把新港街道的成立记在1989年4月。[1]名称取自辖区内的新港村。[3]
地理环境[edit]
街道位于汕尾市南部：北邻凤山街道，西接香洲街道，东南隔着汕尾渔港与捷胜镇相对。辖区以二马路、通航路、汕马公路为界，沿汕尾港两岸展开，街道网页列出的渔船为535艘，合计67824千瓦、26043吨。[2]另一份概况则写作641艘深中海渔船、总功率81131千瓦，所指年份未注明。[1]
人口[edit]
概况页称共有47852人，渔业人口占22017人；第七次全国人口普查（2020年）后，博雅地名网记为4.82万人，居汕尾市城区各街道镇的第4位。[1][3]
经济[edit]
渔业是主要收入来源。街道以海洋捕捞、网箱养殖和高位池养殖为主，水产加工、冷冻、制冰、制网以及船机安装维修等配套行业齐备；汕尾港被称为国家一级渔港。[1][2]对岸的新港、芳荣一带土地较宽裕，是街道考虑引进外资和旅游项目的地方。[1]
老市区的几条街各有分工：二马路是老商业街，大马路集中卖海产干货，海边街服务渔业，海滨大道则是饮食一条街。[1]二马路的掇鸟街一带还辟为海边文化特色街，卖海产和城区的特色食品。[7]新园社区辖区内有汕尾市五千吨级码头。[5]
文化[edit]
汕尾渔歌是渔民在海上生活中即兴对唱的民歌，2014年列入国家级非物质文化遗产名录。[6]据街道的介绍，渔歌在这里被列为省级非遗，2008年在广东省第二届民间歌会上得金奖，老歌手苏少琴获评国家级传承人。[4]街道内有小学三所，其中街道中心小学由原红卫小学改称。[1]
