南方村因村内小学的校门朝南而得名。原名东观村，40年代初村南的黄姓人家办了东观小学，「东观」是黄姓祖先的号；新中国成立后学校改名南方小学。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

1954至1955年与陂宁同为一个乡，1962年成立大队，叫南方大队，1984年改乡，1999年起为村民委员会。2004年11月撤销坜陂镇，该村改归坭陂镇。2019年9月，南方村被列入2018年广东省「民主法治示范村（社区）」创建单位名单。[1]
