塘北社区在涵东街道范围内，社区原是涵东村下的塘北自然村，村落设立居委会后，便以此为名。[1]

2002年莆田行政区划调整时，涵东村被拆村建居，原塘北自然村改为塘北社区。2022年12月，社区被福建省爱国卫生运动委员会命名为「2022年福建省卫生社区」。[1]

名胜古迹[edit]

涵江天主堂别称圣母堂，是莆田天主教的总堂。1849年（道光二十九年）由民房改建成教堂，屋顶设哥特式钟楼；1900年（光绪二十六年）加建神父楼，1923年又改成水泥与砖木混合的结构。[2]
