地名资料称，明代刘、胡、李几姓在此占地立庄，因来自多个姓氏，故得名。[1]
中华人民共和国成立后属响水乡，1958年归新作塘公社，1990年起称东埔村民委员会，2006年响水镇并入湖镇镇。[1]
