村名含有拥护新中国、盼望国家与人民常新不衰的寓意。[1]中华人民共和国成立后称新华大队，1992年改为新华管理区，1998年起称华新村民委员会。[1]

村有水田698亩、旱地189亩、山地13000亩。[1]村里以种植蜜柑为主导产业，并发展果、猪、蔗的特色产业，打造“怀集蜜柑”品牌。[1]
