村距县城26公里、距坑口圩镇5公里，辖25个村民小组，618户、2483人。[1]尾叶桉种植面积4000多亩；2020年8月，下寨（南药）入选首批广东省“一村一品、一镇一业”专业村，并已创建16条省级卫生村。[1]
清道光时属顾溪铺；1930年称大峒乡，隶第八区，乡名得自境内的大峒庙；1958年设下寨大队，1983年起改称下寨乡，1987年设下寨村委会，1998年起为下寨村民委员会。[1]
下寨炮楼砖木结构，占地162平方米，现存两层，原为三层，1948年被粤桂湘边纵队攻占后拆去第三层。[2]
