民国后期属名教乡；1952年土地改革时拆为名教、水口两乡；1958年公社化后归莞圹公社，设水口、梅洞、岭儿头三个大队，1962年合成水口大队。1983年为水口乡，1987年2月起设村民委员会，1989年改称管理区办事处，1999年又恢复村民委员会，沿用至今。[1]
