江南街道在广东省梅州市梅江区境内，处于梅州城区南部、梅江河以南，下辖14个社区。辖区面积约5平方公里；2020年第七次全国人口普查时有常住人口约9.16万人，在梅江区的街道和镇中排第3位。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

清代，这一带分属水南、白土二堡；民国时期属水南乡、白土乡和水白区，新中国成立后称水白乡。1958年以后先后归城郊、梅江两个公社，1975年设立江南公社，1981年12月另设南区办事处。1983年11月两者合并，仍称南区办事处；1988年县、区分设，改称江南办事处，隶属梅州市梅江区。[1]

地名由来[edit]

辖区在梅江河南岸，故称江南。[1]

辖区概况[edit]

据办事处自己的介绍，2007年末辖区共有36140户、97906人。2006年底，辖区内有省、市、县（区）机关事业单位和社会团体243个，党员8464人。办事处2003年被广东省和梅州市选为街道社区党建的试点。2007年，辖区新引进企业26家，注册资本合计5161万元。[2]
