基背村座落在双水镇东南，距双水圩5公里，面积约3.2平方千米，由基背、竹咀、祝斗和五斗几处聚落组成。[1] 村子建在黎马沙河西岸的基围背后，故名基背。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

清顺治年间（1644年—1661年），余姓先祖从新宁（今台山）迁来建村，聚落呈「目」字形。[1] 道光县志称这里有张、余两姓，属泷水都。[1] 民国时属第七区达仁乡，1951年起称基背乡；1958年前后改称管理区、大队，1961年分出嘉寮、楼墩两个大队，1987年称基背村委会。[1]

经济[edit]

村里耕地4044亩，居民2670多人，多数住在河东，以种水稻、甘蔗为主，兼种蔬菜、香蕉，设有小学一所。[1] 旅居美国、加拿大和东南亚各国的华侨有40多人，港澳同胞120多人。[1] 基背村在2019年9月列入2018年广东省「民主法治示范村（社区）」创建单位名单。[1]
