平南社区在龙岗街道中心，面积约1.45平方千米，夹在龙溪河与龙岗河之间，南起植物园路，北到龙平东路。[1] 常住人口38197人，其中户籍13640人。[1] 辖区以花园小区和商业街为主。[1][2]

社区有16个花园小区（如长海雅园、东方明珠城、九州家园、摩尔城、运河蓝湾等）、国际茶都和赛格电子市场2个专业市场、1个城中村（西二村），以及植物园路、4个大型商场和12条商业街。[1]
