村子位于县城东面，靠近城关，是县城的东大门。国道205线与省道308线在村中心附近交叉，交通方便。[1]

村名的来历，据传此处原为水狮渡口，因“狮”与“西”同音，遂改称水西。[1]

人口与经济[edit]

全村共361户、1456人，设12个村民小组，耕地650亩，人均耕地约0.45亩，以上数字见于博雅地名网，未注明统计年份。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

民国时此处设保；1949年解放初归附城区，村名为水西村，1956年转入水西高级社，1957年冬区乡调整后归城郊乡。[2]

1958年公社化后隶属城郊公社，1961年10月再设为城郊公社水西大队，1980年改由管委会管理。1984年起为城郊乡下属村，1986年改属临城乡，1993年称临城镇水西村民委员会。[2]

文化[edit]

2021年11月，省爱卫办命名水西村为「2021年福建省卫生村」。[1]
