水西村位于文川溪西岸，村名由此而来。[1][2] 村子始建于宋朝，明清时期属永安县二十九都。[3] 村中的水西红一军团驻地旧址（拱秀堂）位于水西洋自然村，博雅地名网列为一般不可移动文物。[1] 2021年4月，村庄被命名为「2021年三明市民主法治示范村（社区）」。[1]
