城西社区属汕尾市城区香洲街道，设城内、西门两个居民小组，辖区内有明代海防城池坎下城。[1]
历史沿革[edit]
解放初，此地属东冲区香州乡；人民公社时期设新联大队，归香洲公社，1982年起称新光大队。1989年改为新光管理区，隶香洲街道；1999年起称城西居委会。[1]
坎下城[edit]
坎下城在市区的城内村，博雅地名网说它建于明崇祯十年（1636年）：本邑的都给事叶高标上奏获准，知县李炫负责督造。周长1157米的城墙原高5.6米，今存3米，顶上本有391个垛口。城按“所城”的规制布置，设有文武衙门、兵营、火药库、旗台库、盐场使司和内校场，也容纳民居与书院，总占地7.2万平方米。[1][2]
百度百科则记，城由叶高标于崇祯九年奏建，次年完工；原设四门，西门是通海的水门；城墙为灰沙夯筑的双层夹墙，现存约七成。1995年5月它被公布为城区文保单位，2008年11月18日升为第五批省级文保单位。[3][4]城区政府网站称它是全国保存最完整的两座明代海防城池之一。[5]
