社区名称由辖区内第一个有地标意义的大型城市综合体「佛山智慧新城」中的「智」「城」二字组成。[1] 智城社区居委会2014年获批设立。[1]
2019年9月，智城社区进入2018年广东省「民主法治示范村（社区）」创建单位名单；2025年11月又入选「广东省未来社区（完整社区）建设试点名单」。[1]
