牛山社区位于五环路与107国道交汇处，与南城、大岭山接壤，土地总面积10.6平方千米。[1][2]

社区有12个自然村，社区名称取自明代牛头村与山门村各一字。[2]

户籍家庭1088户，登记人口4161人，另有流动人口一万余。姓氏以李、张、刘居多。[1][2]

社区有一个中心工业园、十四个工业小区与一座商贸中心；另有企业九十余家，大型商场三间，店铺一千六百多间，农贸市场两座。[2]

社区于2013年完成集体经济统筹管理的分社改革，2014年改设党工委。[2]
