保护区1984年由广东省人民政府批准建立，百度百科称其为广东省首批省级自然保护区之一。[1]生态环境部公布的《广东省自然保护区名录（截止2012年底）》将其列为惠东县的森林生态类型省级保护区，主管部门为林业，建立时间记作1984年4月4日，面积2189.2公顷，保护对象为亚热带常绿阔叶林及珍稀动植物。[2]

地理环境[edit]

保护区位于惠东县西北部，属莲花山山脉，为低山台地，靠近北回归线。北面是坪天嶂和石人嶂，最高峰坪天嶂海拔1069米，地势北高南低；西北面邻梁化镇属的国营林场，并与御景峰省级森林公园接壤，东南面连着吉布一带的生态林区。[1]据该条目，这一带年平均气温21.7摄氏度，原生植被属季风常绿阔叶林。[1]

据百度百科，保护区内森林覆盖率为99.47%，立木蓄积量约24.7万立方米，记录的野生维管植物共1130种。[1]保护区用红外相机按网格监测野生动物，累计记下陆生脊椎动物240种，国家二级保护动物占29种；2025年的监测中，红脚田鸡和香港湍蛙是新增的记录。[1]
