村名的来历是：村民住在一座高山脚下，就以“高山下”立村名，村委会驻地则在樟木垌村。[1]

高山下原属陀村大队，1961年分出另立；其后依次改为乡（1983年）、村委会（1986年）、管理区（1990年），2000年定为村委会。[1]

村内现有1167户5134人，其中党员89人；出产甘蔗、红橙、荔枝、龙眼、花生、木薯和山地鸡（据博雅地名网村情，年份未注明）。[1]
