城北是汕头市澄海区广益街道的社区，因位于旧澄海县城的北面得名。明嘉靖四十二年（1563）设澄海县，县治就在这里的辟望。[1][2]

历史沿革[edit]

城北原属海阳县怀德乡下外莆都，所在地名辟望。1563年（嘉靖四十二年）澄海置县，辟望成了县治所在，北边一片起初叫北社，后改称城北。[1][2]

民国时期，1921年废都设区；到1932年称北社，1945年升作北社镇，隶澄海第一区（在城），次年改名城北镇。[2]新中国成立后，1951年设城北居民办事处，归城关镇管；1953年改设第二居民办事处；此后几度并入在城镇、城关镇，1985年划归澄城镇，1986年设城北居委会。[2]

澄城镇于1996年1月撤销，城北随之划入广益街道；2002年1月设立城北社区。[2]
