上村位于盐田畲族乡西北部，与崇儒畲族乡交界，地处杯溪中段，因位于杯溪上游而得名。[1][2]

村始建于清代初期，历史悠久。1950年属王高店乡，1958年设上村生产大队，1984年改为上村村。[1]

村中保存较好的汤家大厝已有二百三十多年历史，郑家大厝也有一百六十多年历史，与周边古厝合称杯溪古厝群。民国23年（1934年），福霞下西区委在村中建立。[1][2]

2020年2月，上村村列入福建省第三批省级传统村落；2021年11月，被命名为「2021年福建省卫生村」；2022年10月，列入第六批中国传统村落。[1]
