上郭社区属晋江市新塘街道，位于晋江市中部，东与石狮市相接，省道306线穿过社区两侧。社区旧称象谷。[1]
地名由来[edit]
此地旧名象谷、上谷，另有上格、尚图等写法。因三面依山、前面平坦，地势形如畚箕，层层而上，称为上格；明清时以谐音雅称象阁，民国时以方言谐音改称上郭。[1]
历史沿革[edit]
1956年划为栖梧区上郭村，1961年归罗山公社上郭大队，1984年设罗山乡上郭村委会，1991年起称罗山镇上郭村委会。2003年底罗山镇撤销，设新塘街道，上郭改为社区。[1]
