沟头社区是霞林街道下辖的社区，属主城区。社区的名字经过几次变动：清代以来此地归熬头管辖，解放后与棠坡合称一处，后又与东坡村合并为沟东村，独立成村后因地处村头而改称沟头。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

解放前，这里归鳌头村所管。1949年，与棠坡合称的沟东村一度存在，1955年两地分开后，此处成为城郊公社的沟头大队。进入1980年代，它先是城郊乡的一个大队，继而在1986年归城南乡的村委会，又于1989年转为居委会的建制。2000年起，它归霞林街道的沟头居委会管辖。[1]

荣誉[edit]

2021年3月，社区被确定为「莆田市第十五届市级文明村镇（社区）」。2024年1月，社区被命名为「2023年福建省卫生社区」。[1]
